Investing.com– Vice President Kamala Harris has secured support from enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s official nominee against Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, an Associated Press survey showed.
The AP survey indicated that Harris has the backing of at least 2,214 delegates, giving her more than enough support to win the nomination. The survey also found overwhelming support from within the party for Harris to replace Biden.
Harris was endorsed by Biden after he said he will not seek reelection on Sunday. She was seen gaining endorsements from several top Democrats after Biden’s decision, while donations to the Democratic party also soared after the decision.
But Harris still needs to be officially nominated as the party’s candidate, with either a vote during the Democratic National Convention in August or if the party decides to hold a virtual roll call before the meeting.
Recent polls showed Trump was polling ahead of Harris and Biden, although the impact of Biden’s dropping out on the election outlook was yet to be seen. Trump was officially nominated as the Republican candidate last week.
